The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan invites the community to visit the campus for the latest Fine Arts Gallery art exhibition. Artwork by award-winning paper and book artist, Cheryl Mahowald will be on display through June 29. This exhibit is a retrospective of her work in paper arts. A special artist reception is planned for Friday, June 15, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

Cheryl Mahowald is from Newton, Wisconsin, and her work has been exhibited at various galleries, museums and libraries in the U.S. She holds a B.A. from Iowa State University and has worked in the field of Art and Design since 1982. She has taught papermaking and bookbinding to all ages - from preschool children to adults.  She is a partner in Prairie Spirit Papers, Inc. and co-founder of the Book and Paper Arts Guild in Wheaton, Illinois. She is also a member of Friends of Dard Hunter, the Sheboygan Visual Artists and the Lakeshore Artists Guild

Paper was invented almost 2000 years ago. Cheryl’s obsession with handmade paper began over 20 years ago. Drawn to the sensory aspect and ‘zen-like’ quality of making paper by hand, Cheryl likes the smell of cooking fiber, the feel of the pulp in the vat, and the sound of the water as it drains through the mold. She loves the entire process.

Since paper is an “extremely versatile medium,” Mahowald has found that it can be dyed, stitched, folded, painted, woven, and sculpted. “Through the years, I have learned many traditional fiber art and mixed-media techniques that I use in my artists books and paper art,” she said.

The Fine Arts Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information about the show or UW-Sheboygan's Fine Arts Gallery, contact Gallery Director Dan Smith at UW-Sheboygan is located at One University Drive in Sheboygan.
