Universal Borrowing (UB): Placing Requests using the Library Catalog

Requesting Items from Other UW Colleges & Other UW System Libraries

Purpose: to help you place requests for books, videos and recordings not at UW Sheboygan Library, using the UW Colleges Library Catalog. Please ask Library Staff for help at any time.

Order a book, video or CD from another UW Colleges Library

  1. Locate your item through the UW Colleges Catalog at: http://collib.wisconsin.edu/
  2. If you have more than one title in your search results, click on the Title of the item you want to request. You are now in the item record.
    1. Check that UW Sheboygan does not own the item.
    2. The item's status must be available.
  3. With the item record on your screen, choose the Request This Item button at the top of the screen.
  4. Enter your UW Colleges ID Number/Barcode plus last name and click on Login
    1. Students: enter the last 10 digits of your student ID number. Find these digits at the bottom of your UWS Student ID Card or by looking up your student account at: https://selfservice.uwc.edu. Staff can look up the number for you as well.
    2. Faculty/staff: contact the library to obtain your ID/Barcode number. If you have a UW Sheboygan ID Card, your ID/Barcode number is at the bottom of your card.
  5. Select OK below the box that states Request from another UW Colleges Library.
  6. In the Pick Campus to Send to pull down menu (Choose Pickup Location), select UW Sheboygan Circ Desk.
  7. Enter your ID/Barcode again.
  8. Select Submit Request.
  9. Check your UWS campus e-mail account for notification that the item is here or check at the Library Circulation Desk to find out if the item is here for pickup.
  10. One renewal allowed through the online catalog through the Your Account button at the top of the page.

Order a book, video or CD from another UW System Library

  1. This feature is available only to current students, faculty & staff.
  2. Use the UW Colleges Library Catalog at http://collib.wisconsin.edu/
  3. Check that the item is not available at UW Sheboygan or another UW Colleges Library (see the procedure above).
  4. Select the More Libraries button at the top of the page.
  5. In the first box, select the library you wish to search.
    1. Select All UW System/Universal Borrowing Libraries to include all UW Libraries.
    2. Select more than one library by following the instructions on that page.
    3. Select the Connect button.
  6. You may be sent to the Basic Search screen, which is good for general topic searching.
    1. Unless you want to do an author search, change the field listed in the box after In: by using the pull down menu. Usually change to a Keyword (Any Field) search.
    2. If you are searching for a specific title or author, use the Advanced Search.
  7. Enter your search words and click on the Search button at the bottom of the screen.
    1. You will see a box titled Search Multiple Catalogs -- when the search is done click on the Show button at the bottom of the screen. Select the browser's Refresh button if no titles are shown.
    2. Click on the title of the item you want to order. Check the status of the item, which must be available.
  8. Choose the Request This Item button at the top of the screen
  9. Enter your UW Colleges ID Number/Barcode plus last name and click on Login
    1. For students: enter the last 10 digits of your student ID number. Find these digits on the bottom of your Student ID Card or by looking up your student account at: https://selfservice.uwc.edu. Staff can look up the number for you as well.
    2. For faculty/staff: contact the library to obtain your ID/Barcode number. If you have a UW Sheboygan ID Card, your ID (barcode) number is at the bottom of your card.
  10. Click the OK button below Request from another UW System Library.
  11. Enter your UW Colleges ID Number (Barcode)
  12. In the Pick Campus to Send to pull down menu (Choose Pickup Location), select UW Sheboygan Circ Desk
  13. Click on Submit Request
  14. Check your UWS campus e-mail account for notification that the item is here or check at the Library Circulation Desk to find out if the item is here for pickup.

General Information about Universal Borrowing (UB)

  • Request items from all UW System libraries from your office/home.
  • Use the ILLiad interlibrary loan service to request items not found through a UW campus library.
  • Check the status of your request through the Your Account button at the top of search creens in the UW Colleges Library Catalog.
  • Most items available for UB are checked out for 28 days, with two renewals possible.
  • Faculty/Staff have a semester loan checkout for UB items, with one renewal possible.
  • Videos, other media, and curriculum items are checked out for 14 days, no renewals.
  • Journal articles, reference, reserve and special collections items are not available through Universal Borrowing. (use the ILLiad interlibrary loan service for requesting journal articles)
  • Items you request will be delivered to the UW Sheboygan Circulation Desk. You may specify another UW Library location as your pick-up point.
  • You may return UB materials to any UW System Library on or before the due date.
