Guide to UW Colleges Online Library Catalog

Purpose: This guide helps you find library items, such as books, videos and recordings, at UW Sheboygan and the other 12 UW Colleges libraries. You can also use this catalog to search other UW System libraries’ holdings.

Note:  At any time you want to return to the main screen,  click on the long bar at the top of the screen (UW Colleges Library Catalog).

Choose Guided Search for general keyword searches

• Select Set More Limits.
• From the Location box, select UW Sheboygan and click on Set Limits button
• Set limits after a search: click on the Limits button (follow above directions)  

• Type word(s) in the Find This box. For multiple words, click down arrow to select:
  • all the terms (default): finds items with all of the terms entered, which is a Boolean and search
  • any of the terms: find items with any of the terms entered, which is a Boolean or search
• as a phrase: displays items with your terms found next to one another.
• When typing terms in more than one Find This box, combine words with AND, OR, NOT, by clicking on the circle next to the term.
• Choose fields to search by using the arrow next to the In This box such as:
  • Keyword Anywhere (default): finds terms found anywhere in the record.
  • Subject Keyword: matches words found in the Library of Congress Subject Headings used.
• Click on the Search button

Choose SEARCH when you know the title or author of an item or for one word keyword searching. Click the Search tab at the top of the search box.

• To Limit to this library, scroll through Quick Limits to select UW Sheboygan.
• For phrase searching in Keyword, use quotation marks (e.g., "death penalty").
• Quick Limits do not work with Author, Subject, or Call Number searches.
• If you are looking for more than one word in Keyword, connect the terms by using Boolean operators (and, or, not) (e.g., Africa and storytelling).
• Omit initial articles (a, an, the, der, die, das, la, le, etc.) in Title searches.
• Use ? to truncate a word (creat? finds create, creating and creation). This also works in Guided Search.

• If you forget to set limits before searching, click on the Limits button on the right side of the screen. Set your limits. The search will run again with limits. 
• If only one UWC Library has an item, the call number and status is shown.
• To display basic information, click on the title of the item.
  • Subject(s) are Library of Congress Subject Headings. Click on a subject heading to find similar items. Your limits will no longer be set.   
  • Scroll to find the location, call number and availability of an item.  
  • To go back to your list of titles, click on the RETURN TO TITLES button at the top of the screen.
• Place your own request for an item not at UWS —see Place Requests below.

Place Requests/Universal Borrowing/Interlibrary Loan

While using the catalog, students, faculty and staff may place their own requests for items not found at UWS. This service is called Universal Borrowing. The item will be delivered to the UWS Library. If UW College Libraries do not own an item, you can search UW System libraries by clicking on the More Libraries button.

You can also place requests for items at the UW System Libraries, a service called Universal Borrowing. For procedures on how to place your own requests see the Universal Borrowing Library Guide. If no UW Library has the item you are looking for, you may request it by filling out an online Interlibrary Loan (ILL) form at: http://sheboygan.uwc.edu/library/Ill.htm.  ILL Requests take three to 10 days to process. If you have any questions, ask Library staff for help.

Print—E-mail—Save
 

• Single record—from E-mail-Print-Save Options box at the bottom of the record click on Format for Print/Save.
• Multiple records—from the Titles results screen, click on the boxes to the left of the records you want to mark. At the bottom of the screen, in the Records box, click Selected on Page. Click on Format for Print/Save.
  
• All records—from the Titles results screen, in the Records box, click on All on Page; click on Format for Print/Save.

 Your Account

Click on the YOUR ACCOUNT button—enter your UW Colleges ID Number/Barcode (last 10 digits of your student ID number)—to see:

• Personal information (name, address, etc.)

• Search preferences

• A list of what is checked out to you and due dates

• Renew items

• Fines and fees

• Status of Universal Borrowing requests

Finding your way around the Catalog

               

• New Search: begin a new search at any time

• Return to Headings: lets you return to a list of headings in a subject or author search

• Return to Titles: returns to the list of results for your last search once you are in a record

• Library Info: takes to you to a list of the UWC Library home pages

• Your Account: see what you have checked out, fines owed, requests pending

• Place Requests: See Universal Borrowing section above

• Preferences: pick a default search type, number of items shown, other default catalogs (see Your Account section above for login instructions)

• Saved Searches: save last search by clicking on Save Search Query at bottom of screen

• Saved Records: mark records, click on Save to Saved Records List at bottom of screen to view/search later  

• Search History

o       To edit a search, click on the search number under Edit this Search

o       To rerun a search, click on the highlighted word(s) under Search Type

• More Libraries: search the catalogs of other UW System libraries
