The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan invites the Sheboygan community to a special presentation of The Vagina Monologues on Wednesday, February 12 in the UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Theatre. The production, presented in part through University Theatre and the English Department, aims to raise awareness of violence against women. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Safe Harbor of Sheboygan County
University Theatre Director Dr. Thomas Campbell has paired up with Assistant Professor of English Dr. Ann Mattis to coordinate the show. The cast of 18 women represents UW-Sheboygan students, faculty and staff, as well as several Sheboygan community members.
The Vagina Monologues is an episodic play written by Eve Ensler and is made up of a varying number of monologues read by women. Each of the monologues deals with an aspect of the feminine experience, touching on matters such as sex, love, rape, menstruation, female genital mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the various common names for the vagina, or simply as a physical aspect of the body. A recurring theme throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality.
Every year a new monologue is added to highlight a current issue affecting women around the world. Every year, thousands of local benefit productions are staged to raise funds for local groups, shelters, crisis centers working to end violence against women.
The full show will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on February 12 in the UW-S Fine Arts Theater. Two abbreviated “teaser” performances will be offered FREE to UW-Sheboygan students and the general public from noon to 1 p.m. in the UW-Sheboygan Commons on Monday, February 10 and Tuesday, February 11.
Tickets for the full show are $10 in advance or at the door (available one hour before show time). All UW-Sheboygan students are free with student ID. Advance tickets can be purchased through the UW-Sheboygan Box Office, located in the Business Service Office, during normal business hours or by calling (920) 459-6652.
