With an all-female cast, Women Playing Hamlet will be presented on UW-Sheboygan’s stage April 12-15 at 7:30pm. Dubbed “a comedy about a tragedy,” the spring play will be directed by Thomas Campbell, Assistant Professor in the Communications and Theatre Department at UW-S. Shakespeare fans will appreciate the cleverly written play by award-winning playwright, William Missouri Downs, who has clearly done his homework.
Suggested for mature audiences, Women Playing Hamlet is a delight for fans and will make you laugh whether you’re a fan of Shakespeare or not. Jessica, a 29 year-old actress from Minnesota, has just been cast in the role of Hamlet and is terrified! Everyone is telling her she’s too young, too unprepared, and (gasp!) a woman! All the negativity sends Jessica into a tailspin as she navigates what it means to take on one of Shakespeare’s most complicated characters. Oh, and she’s being stalked by Patrick Stewart. It’s tough for Jessica to figure out “to be
or not to be,” when she can’t even figure out herself.
The ten cast members include Alyssa Mares as Jessica, Angela Ramey as Gwen and Amanda Seefeldt as the Bartender. The other seven members play multiple roles. They include: Karyn Attipoe as a Starbucks Actress and Bicycle Messenger; Leah Bischoff as a Barfly, Rosy and Homeshopping Network Model; Iris Ehaney as a Priest and Emily Ostergaard; Hilarie Mukavitz as Lord Derby and a Minnesota Mother; Lindsay Osuch as Male Psychiatrist and a Gravedigger; Grace Pibbernow as Humanities Professor and Ghost; and Jennifer Schleinz-Herbst as Gilda and Homeshopping Network Hostess. Seefeldt is also the Stage Manager.
