'Purely Conjecture - Observations, Reflections and Fanciful Delusions'

sculpture - UebelherrTom Uebelherr and Rick Ponzio are familiar teachers at UW-Sheboygan. Since 2001, Tom has taught a variety of college art classes including drawing, sculpture, painting and photography. Rick, who has a M.A. from Bowling
Green State University, is a Senior Lecturer in Communications/Theatre Arts at both the UW-Sheboygan and  UW-Washington County campuses.

What you may not know is that both educators are also talented artists. Their creative work will be exhibited from March 30 through April 29 in the campus art gallery. The opening reception for the exhibit titled, “Purely Conjecture – Observations, Reflections and Fanciful Delusions” is Thursday, April 6 from 5-7pm.  Admission is free.

According to Ponzio, the creative title was a result of “long discussions over coffee.” The talented educators/artists wanted a title “that would embody our works as shown together.” The creative entries definitely fit the billing. Carved out of Minnesota Dolomitic limestone, one of Ponzio’s pieces is called "House Pet" and is a cross between a dog and a dinosaur with a 'happy to see you' smile. Another work titled "Visions of the Future" is hand carved from Indiana limestone. Ponzio explains that “it is an expression of an inner state rather than a portrait. Having a momentary glimpse at our internal projection of the future might result in such an image - or at least that's my purely conjectural rendering.” Uebelherr’s creativity is also in evidence with a sculpture titled, “Creations of an Ex-Smoker.”  The unique eye-catching piece created with concrete, steel and lilac root, definitely sends a clear message about smoking.

The Fine Arts Gallery is open to the public, Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The gallery is located inside the Fine Arts Building on the UW Sheboygan campus located at One University Drive in Sheboygan. Gallery hours are: Monday- Thursday 8am-9pm and Friday 8am-6pm. It is open to the public and admission is free.
