On Tuesday, February 13, the Speakers’ Series returns to UW-Sheboygan with a very timely topic: Social Aspects of Sport – with a Salute to 1968, An Olympic Stage for Social Justice. According to speaker, Jared Dalberg, “sport has served as a national and international platform as well as an agent for change - led by a few brave athletes.” Dalberg will focus on the “tumultuous time period of 1967-1969 when many racial and political changes were taking place - much of it captured on television. Right in the middle of all the unrest, the 1968 Olympics were taking place in Mexico City, led by Avery Brundage, the only International Olympic Committee President in history. His staunch ideals were contested among many athletes.”
The one-hour lecture begins at 7pm in the Wombat Room (Room 2114) on the UW-Sheboygan campus, located at One University Drive in Sheboygan. Dalberg is an Associate Professor of Health/Exercise Science/Athletics and has taught at the UW Colleges for over 10 years. He earned a M.Ed. in Health & Physical Education from Augusta State University in Augusta, GA, and completed his undergraduate studies at UW- LaCrosse.
The Olympic Project for Human Rights called for a boycott of the 1968 Summer Olympic Games. That organization was established to protest against racial segregation in the U.S. as well as racism in sports. According to Dalberg, “Not all athletes were on board, so it was decided that winning the events and showing solidarity was the next best thing to do.” Dalberg will explain how Sports Sociology - which investigates the dynamic influence of sport on society and society on sport – gained significant attention because of these 1967-1969 events, as an organized, legitimate field of study.
The Speaker’s Series presents a new topic each month (September – May) that is discussed in an open forum format. Admission and parking are free.
