Upward Bound at UW-Sheboygan

Upward Bound is a pre-college academic achievement program designed to help students develop the motivation and skills that are required to graduate from high school and successfully complete a college degree. Our local program serves students on both the UW-Sheboygan and UW-Manitowoc campuses from Sheboygan North and South High Schools, Manitowoc Lincoln High School and Two Rivers High School.

The goal of Upward Bound is to:

• Improve academic skills
• Teach effective study strategies
• Explore career choices
• Provide experiences in diverse cultural and educational activities
• Promote personal growth and responsibility

Upward Bound programs are funded by the US Department of Education, Federal TRIO Programs. An estimated 2 million students have graduated from college with the support and assistance of TRIO Programs. Upward Bound is intended for first-generation college students who meet federal income eligibility guidelines.

Established in 1990. the joint UW-Sheboygan and UW-Manitowoc Upward Bound program begins serving students in grade 9 and follows them throughout their four years of high school at the program’s four target high schools.

Program Requirements:

• Students must have interest and desire to attend college.
• Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA
• Students must be willing to fully participate in UB in the summer as well as during the school year.

Upward Bound encourages cultural diversity and invites applications from eligible students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. There are no fees to participate in the Upward Bound program.

In addition to the high school academic year activities, which include after-school tutoring services and weekly contact with an academic adviser, Upward Bound students also participate in a six-week-long summer session that features various academic subjects for college preparation purposes. Summer sessions are held at either the UW-Sheboygan or UW-Manitowoc campus on an annual rotating basis. Summer activities also include college visits and a group trip.
