AmeriCorps VISTA Program
UW-Sheboygan is proud to have a Wisconsin Campus Compact (WiCC) AmeriCorps VISTA member serving here. The VISTA is responsible for increasing civic engagement levels on campus through service learning courses, internship and volunteer opportunities.
WiCC is part of the national Campus Compact coalition, which is comprised of roughly 1,200 colleges and universities that are committed to their communities and strive to create a culture of service.
AmeriCorps VISTA began as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965. The program was designed to specifically address poverty issues on a local level. VISTA became part of the group of AmeriCorps programs when they were created in 1993.
During the 2009-2010 academic year, the VISTA member focused on working with small businesses in the area to help our economy during these trying times. For the next few years, the focus of the VISTA member will shift to college access issues. The VISTA member will work with local high school non-completers, GED completers who would like to further their education and at-risk middle and high school youth in Sheboygan County.
Through pre-college programming, mentoring programs and other interactions, the VISTA member and UW-Sheboygan would like to help people realize their potential! Opportunity awaits these individuals, and sometimes they just need “a hand up” instead of “a hand out.”
