Local students receive honors, awards at Honors Convocation

The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan bestowed awards and honors on more than 100 students during the college’s 2012 Honors Convocation ceremony on May 3. The ceremony, which featured scholarship and student recognition award winners, attracted about 200 students, faculty, staff and guests to the UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Theatre.

Besides student awards, guests also were treated to convocation speaker, UW-Sheboygan Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. James Kabrhel, who encouraged all students to find an opportunity to “teach” and not just learn. He shared an experience as a teenager struggling with Calculus and how a simple suggestion by his father to “explain” the math problems that were perplexing him so changed his entire understanding of the subject.

Kabrhel is the driving force behind the popular “Cool Chemistry” demo night, which attracts over 300 area children and parents to the campus. In 2011, Dr. Kabrhel was honored with the 2011 UW-Sheboygan Teaching Award for his commitment to student success.

Eric Aldape was named the school’s 2012 Graduate of the Year for his strong convictions, commitment to academics and commendable campus volunteerism, while Sarah Ledvina received the Class of 2012 Valedictorian honors. (Both Aldape and Ledvina will address their class of 2012 peers as student speakers at the upcoming 2012 Commencement Ceremony on May 17.)

Retired UW-Sheboygan Assistant Professor of Math Lee Marquardt was honored with the 2012 Distinguished Athletic Department Service Award for his longtime service to UW-Sheboygan student-athletes. For 20 years, Marquardt served on the campus Athletics Committee and spent 30 years as a volunteer for the Athletics Department serving as scoreboard operator for home basketball games.

Additional students honored this year with scholarships and awards include those provided by the UW-Sheboygan Foundation and numerous local businesses, organizations and individual donors. Other students received recognition awards from campus departments for their academic performance and athletic contributions.
