UW-Sheboygan graduates more than 100 students

The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan graduated 114 students in the campus’s annual commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 17, in the university’s Fine Arts Theatre. Nearly 50 UW-Sheboygan graduates and 11 collaborative bachelor’s degree graduates participated in the hour-long ceremony, which featured Suzanne Doemel, Coordinator for the UW-Sheboygan/UW Oshkosh Teaching Program, as the keynote speaker. Two student speakers also addressed the Class of 2012.

UW-Sheboygan graduates from the Fall 2011, Winterim 2012, Spring 2012 and Summer 2012 terms were honored with associate of arts and sciences degrees by UW-Sheboygan Interim Dean and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Paul Chase, along with 20 graduates from UW-Sheboygan’s collaborative degree programs with UW Oshkosh and UW-Milwaukee.

Since 2004, Doemel has worked with UW Oshkosh, serving as an academic advisor in the College of Education and Human Services, coordinator of the College of Menominee Nation/Wind River Tribal College teacher education program, and the coordinator and adviser at UW-Sheboygan for the collaborative degree program in Early Childhood Education, which graduated its largest cohort to date during the ceremony.

In addition to her duties with UW Oshkosh, Doemel also works as a Private Education Consultant for the Lac du Flambeau School District and the Denmark Public School District. Prior to joining UW Oshkosh, she worked with the Oshkosh Area School District as a reading specialist and elementary classroom teacher for 13 years, and also assisted CESA #1 in Milwaukee as a REACH Initiative Educational Mentor for six years.

As the night’s keynote speaker, Doemel told graduates about the importance of facing your fears, taking risks and always sharing your knowledge with others. She shared her memories of spending a summer teaching in the bush on the island of Fiji in an attempt to test her own skills and abilities as a teacher, and the many challenges and successes she has encountered post “retirement” as an educator through helping the next generation of teachers find their path to the classroom.

The evening featured two student speakers, 2012 Graduate of the Year Eric Aldape and Valedictorian Sarah Ledvina, both of whom shared their well wishes and words of support and inspiration to their fellow classmates.
