Cool Chemistry event set for April 29
Area children, parents invited to ‘explosive’ Cool Chemistry Night
UW-Sheboygan to host event April 29
The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan invites the community to attend an educational, exciting -- and somewhat explosive -- evening of “Cool Chemistry” on Thursday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre.
UW-Sheboygan chemistry students will be performing and describing fascinating, attention-grabbing experiments including:
- Foaming fountains
- Amazing “sunsets”
- Surprising color changes
- Screaming candy, and
- non-Burning towels and more!
Audience members, who can expect some big “bangs” and flames throughout the evening, may also be asked to assist in some of the demonstrations. Kids also will be given the opportunity to create something “cool” to take home after the show with the help of UW-S chemistry students. To participate on on-stage demonstrations, children will be able to put their name into a drawing upon entering the theater.
This popular annual UW-Sheboygan event, which aims to increase interest in science among elementary and middle school-age children, will once again be organized this year by Dr. Jim Kabrhel, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, with assistance from Dr. Karrie Rukamp, Associate Instructor of Chemistry.
The community demonstration will allow UW-Sheboygan students to gain valuable public speaking experience, as well as practice their knowledge of common chemistry-related experiments, Kabrhel said.
The “Cool Chemistry” event will offer UW-Sheboygan Chemistry students a beneficial experience that goes beyond the traditional classroom work, Kabrhel said.
“Demonstrating simple experiments in front of an audience allows the students to step into a teaching role, which is a very important part of the learning process,” he explained.
“Cool Chemistry” is a free event and is appropriate for children of all ages (elementary school and up). Parents should note that the event will require TICKETS this year due to its growing popularity. Advance tickets (at no cost) will be available by calling the UW-Sheboygan Box Office at 459-6652 (and leave a message). Seating is limited to 300 people. Only five tickets per request, per day, please.
Advance tickets may be picked up at the UW-Sheboygan Business Services Office between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. All advance tickets must be picked up by noon on April 29. If tickets remain the day of the event, tickets will be available at the Box Office up to one hour before show time.
