SHEBOYGAN-AREA ART LOVERS are invited to visit the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan’s Fine Arts Gallery for a diverse exhibition of original watercolors from a variety of local artists. The show, “SPLASH 6 1/2,” will run through October 30 and includes paintings from students of local watercolor artist and instructor James Michael. The public is invited to attend a special opening reception with the artists and light refreshments on Friday, October 2, from 5:00 p. m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery. The gallery is open Monday–Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Most of the paintings will be available for purchase.

JOIN THE UW-SHEBOYGAN PHI THETA KAPPA and Future Educators of America student organizations for a fundraising Brat Fry on October 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Washington Square Piggly Wiggly (south side location). All funds raised will support adding a Children’s Literature section to the University Library.

DUE TO A VARIETY OF CIRCUMSTANCES, the Wombat Classic 5K Run will not be held on the UW-Sheboygan campus this year. The event may return in 2010. The UW-Sheboygan Foundation appreciates all past support for this fundraiser and asks that supporters consider attending one of the other upcoming Foundation fundraising events, such as the Highland House Fundraising Dinner in March, Whistling Straits Scholarship Fundraising Golf Outing in May, Chicken & All That Jazz in August or contribute to the 2009 Annual Campaign. DON'T MISS THE ASTOUNDING athletic stunts offered by the African Acrobats when they perform on campus, Wednesday, October 21 at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre! Direct from Kenya, this five-person group will offer students, faculty/staff and the Sheboygan community a family-oriented show packed with “ooo’s” and “aah’s!” Tickets are $3 for adults, and children 12 and under and all UW-S students with ID are FREE! Get your tickets in advance by calling the UW-Sheboygan Box Office at (920) 459-6652, or buy your tickets at the door. All seating is first-come, first-serve. All proceeds from the show will be used by the Special Programming Committee to bring other fun and educational community shows to the UW-Sheboygan campus.


THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION will host a blood drive with the Blood Center of Wisconsin from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Wombat Room on October 26. You may sign up in advance online or at the pre-event info session on October 14 or in Student Services. Walk-in donors are also welcome, but appointments are encouraged. You are eligible to donate if you last donated on or before September 1. Please bring a photo ID at the time of donation.


ALL SHEBOYGAN-AREA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are encouraged to attend the upcoming Campus Preview event at the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan on November 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 2114. Participating students will learn more about entering the UW system, tuition costs, degree options, financial aid, the University of Wisconsin’s Guaranteed Transfer Program and much more.

ALL SHEBOYGAN-AREA RESIDENTS are invited to visit the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan University Library Wednesday, October 28 for a special “Night of Celebration” as the campus, county and the library celebrates the library’s selection as the Wisconsin Library Association’s (WLA) 2009 Library of the Year. The WLA recently presented University Library with the official honor during the WLA 2009 Awards Banquet on October 22 in Appleton. The reception, set for 5:30 to 7 p.m. October 28 in the library, will not only celebrate this honor but also showcase the library’s services, resources and technology. University Library is open to all Sheboygan County residents, as well as UW-Sheboygan students. All those interested in learning more about University Library services are encouraged to attend.

 

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS at the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan for a special holiday concert, the “Sounds of the Season,” featuring the UW-Sheboygan Chorus and the UW-Manitowoc Chorus, on Monday, November 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Theatre.

Dr. Dan Vander Linden will direct both the UW-Sheboygan and UW-Manitowoc choruses. Kathy Pedersen will accompany the choirs during the performance. The concert will feature performances by both choruses together, as well as individual performances by each group. Solo performances and small ensembles also will be presented UW-Sheboygan students. Admission is $3 for adults, and all children 12 and under and all UW-Sheboygan students with ID are free. To reserve your seats in advance, call the UW-Sheboygan Box Office at (920) 459-6652 and leave a message, or purchase your tickets the night of the event. The Box Office will open at approximately 6:30 p.m.


UPWARD BOUND WILL PRESENT "MULTICULTURAL AWARENESS NIGHT" on Monday, November 16 at 6 p.m. in Room 2114 (Wombat Room). The special event will feature a series of speakers on topics related to multicultural leadership and community outreach and assistance. The evening also will feature a special presentation about life in Uganda and the hardships that children and adults in this country must endure. Presentations will feature the UW-Sheboygan Southeast Asian Club (SEAC), Upward Bound students and their "Invisible Children" textbook collection service project and the Rev. Elijah Musoke, a Ugandan minister who will share his personal experiences growing up in Uganda. The event is free and open to the public.

LET SINGER AND MUSICIAN Claudia Schmidt transport you to just about anywhere through her amazing talent that weaves together storytelling and song. From traditional folk and jazz music to soothing and fresh original contemporary tunes, Schmidt will entertain audiences in a special lunchtime appearance at the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan campus on Friday, November 20 at 11:45 a.m. in the University Commons. This concert is free and open to the public. This special appearance is brought to the campus and the community by the UW-Sheboygan Special Programs Committee as part of its 2009-10 Coffeehouse Entertainment Series.

DO YOU LOVE EDGAR ALLEN POE? Maybe Robert Frost? How about Maya Angelou? If you love the art of poetry then join the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan for a special Poetry and Open Mic Night on Thursday, December 3 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Paradigm Café in Sheboygan. UW-Sheboygan Assistant Professor of English Dr. James Reitter and Lecturer of English Dr. Erica Wiest will share original poetry during the event, while UW-Sheboygan students and the public will be encouraged to take the stage to share their original poetry or even that of their favorite author. STUDY (AND EAT) YOUR HEART OUT on Study Day, Wednesday, December 16, at the FREE Study Day Pancake Brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Commons. Enjoy a hearty pancake brunch provided by faculty and staff as you study for finals. Special study and review sessions with your instructors also will be available during the brunch. Don't miss this opportunity to eat FREE and be prepared for finals!

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR HENRY GOLDE will share his message of goodwill and hope and his story of survival during World War II in special presentation about his book, Ragdolls, on Wednesday, December 2 at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theater. Golde first shared his story of survival in April 2009 to a packed audience of more than 150 people on the campus. For more than 15 years, Oshkosh resident Golde has shared his life experiences as a survivor of the Holocaust and the atrocities of Nazi Europe. His story is compelling and has the ability to make guests both laugh and cry. Golde’s presentation is age-appropriate for children and is focused on his hope to spread goodwill and the belief that evil can be overcome. Admission to this presentation is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
